Certainly there are nagging undertones of regret to the greatest of the Islamic monuments of Spain, the Great Mosque of Cordoba, for now that its mihrab has been demoted to be a mere curiosity, its courtyard taken in hand by the canons, its huge martial expanse blocked by the Christian altars in the middle, its old brotherly arcades walled in, its ablution fountains converted to ornamental pools, and its wandering sages banished for ever from the orange trees.
